Machine vision can improve injection moulding

Friday 29th October, 2021

The automotive industry doesn’t stop, it’s always moving. Ensuring your quality assurance is up to scratch comes with the job. A new trend in automated vision inspection is the use of autonomous machine vision (AMV).

When it comes to Plastic Injection Molding, a great example of how AI and machine vision can help a business is with Bosch. In Germany, they were facing a colour contrast issue with their machine vision technology. Their technology is all conventional, but means that the systems aren’t equipped to inspect black polymer parts on a blue background. Naturally, this results in it being impossible for machine vision systems to recognise a defect.

The cost of this would be massive. And would be more expensive to put right than to invest in more advanced technology. Bosch decided to give the new technology a try with a pilot programme. After installing automated inspection systems with AI, the team quickly learnt how it worked and it led to immediate savings and an improvement in quality. As you can see, the return on investment happens extremely quickly.

Bosch has since invested further into this technology because of the high-end results. The pilot worked wonders for their manufacturing site in Germany. This is a testament to the technology that is sweeping across the automotive industry right now. Machine vision is the future; it saves time, reduces human error and improves your workflow. And with all of this, it gives you more time to focus on the more important parts of your business – with improved quality comes a continually improved reputation with clients.
